No one ever said having a baby is easy. If you’re feeling stressed about the changes to come, you’re not alone. Managing work, preparing for a new little one and dealing with the changes in your body can all lead to stress during pregnancy. The best thing you can do is to learn to manage these feelings and find ways to reduce your anxiety. Talking to family members or friends, cutting back on chores and taking vacation time can all help relieve stress when you’re expecting.

When you’re pregnant, your mind starts to wander. You might be thinking; how will I balance work, home and a new baby? How will a new baby change my lifestyle? These are all common questions - and common causes for stress pre-baby.
It’s healthy to feel a little anxious before baby arrives. In fact, the stress you feel is helping you mentally prepare for the changes to come. Just don’t let pregnancy anxiety get the best of you.
To help deal with stress during pregnancy, turn to the people who love you most. Family and friends who have been there before can certainly offer advice (whether you want it or not). Listen to your feelings and address them head on - it’s good for you and your growing baby.
How do I deal with stress during pregnancy?
- When in doubt, vent: Something on your mind? Worried about what will happen once baby arrives? Talk to a friend or family member. And if you’re not comfortable doing that, try a support group. Many doctors and hospitals have groups available just for expectant mothers.
- Skip the chores: Sometimes, your house can get the best of you, especially when you’re pregnant. Remember that it’s okay to rest now. The to-do list can wait. If you need help, consider asking a friend, your parents or your spouse…. or hire outside cleaning assistance.
- Make time for yourself: Baby will be here soon enough, and your time will be limited. Enjoy all the things you love - read a book, see a movie, go out for dinner. Down time like this is good for you, and helps you forget your worries. Similarly, take as much vacation as you can.
- Rest, rest, rest: When you’re tired, stress can seem unmanageable. Take a deep breath and relax. Go to bed early and get as much rest as you can.
- Get a move on: Exercise is a terrific stress reliever. Swimming or walking can be just the thing to settle your mind.
