Pregnancy Back Pain

Mid-way through your pregnancy, your baby’s head will settle on the sciatic nerve on the lower part of your spine. Why? Your baby is positioning itself to get ready for birth. In the mean time, though, you might feel a shooting pain in your lower back (aka sciatica). In addition to sciatica, you might also experience lumbar pain or posterior pain. Each of these can be caused by pregnancy hormones, which loosen your joints and ligaments. Thankfully, you don’t have to live with back pain. In fact, there are several smart ways to find relief for the remainder of your pregnancy.

BACK PAIN DURING PREGNANCY

As you enter the later stages of pregnancy, hormones begin to loosen the joints and ligaments that attach your pelvic bones to your spine. This loosening often creates back pain during normal activity, such as walking, sitting or standing.

And, surprise! Your growing baby and uterus are culprits, too. Both maybe putting pressure on a nerve, resulting in, you guessed it… pregnancy back pain.

There are 3 different types of back pain you might experience - lumbar (or lower back), posterior pelvic pain or sciatica.

Lower back pain often comes from sitting for long periods of time, or standing or lifting. You’ll find that this pain is strongest by the end of the day. Posterior pain is literally, a pain in your butt. Walking, climbing stairs, or even getting in and out of the bathtub can all cause this type of pain.

Finally, sciatica tends to radiate from your back to your legs (this pain can be caused by your baby resting on the sciatic nerve).

A few adjustments to your regular routine can help ease back pain. Above all, regular movement is your best friend.

How do I prevent pregnancy back pain?

  • Rest up: Put your feet up to take some of the pressure off your legs and back. Lying down for a little while can help, too. Just be sure to find a position that works for you.

  • Add warmth: A warm heating pad or bath can be just the thing to ease lower back pain.

  • Work out: Ask your doctor for some stretches to help relieve the pressure associated with back pain. Swimming can also help keep weight off your back, and ultimately, helps to strengthen and stretch your back muscles.

  • Talk to your doctor: Tell your doctor or practitioner about the pain you’re feeling. She might suggest alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic or massage to help relive the pain you’re feeling. Just be sure to tell any practitioner that you’re expecting (if it’s not already obvious).
