Spider Veins

What’s red, purple and crawling up your leg? Those sprawling, threadlike webs are spider veins. Tiny versions of varicose veins, spider veins travel close to the skin’s surface, along the thighs, ankles and calves. Varicose spider veins occur when valves in leg veins malfunction. Valves are like swinging one-way doors that push blood towards the heart. When valves weaken, blood flows backwards and pools in the veins, causing superficial ones to dilate and leak.

SAY GOODBYE TO SPIDER VEINS

Some patterns, like Burberry’s plaid, never go out of style. Others, like the scrawls of spider veins on legs, will never be in vogue.

Though you may think you’re the only one hiding spider varicose veins beneath your pants, 75 percent of adults get them. While misery loves company, that doesn’t mean you want to be lumped in with them. You take pride in how you look, and blotchy, branchlike spider veins on legs are not part of your look.

Spider veins in legs can be a precursor to varicose veins. Symptoms may include tired, aching legs or dull leg pain. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins usually don’t require medical treatment.

What causes spider veins?

What causes these annoying eyesores? Ask your mom. Spider and varicose veins run in families, so if an immediate relative, like your sister or grandfather, has not-so-great leg circulation, chances are, you will, too.

Besides genetics, sun damage, hormones and age are other causes of spider veins--as is anything that messes with your circulation. Being overweight, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol will not help if you’re susceptible to spider and varicose veins. Hormonal surges, caused by pregnancy, hormone therapy or birth control pills, can also play a role in spider and varicose veins.

How to prevent spider veins?

But enough finger-pointing. What you want to know is how to get rid of spider veins. There are no disappearing tricks to erase varicose and spider veins, short of surgical options like sclerotherapy and laser treatments. Though effective, these spider vein treatments can be painful and may involve repeat visits. Considered cosmetic, these procedures are not covered by insurance. And, like most things in life, there are no guarantees that new ones won’t crop up where the old ones used to be.

You can also use these at-home treatments to prevent spider veins and keep existing veins from getting worse:

  • How do you get great legs? By exercising. You can take off the extra weight and improve circulation by walking for 30 minutes most days of the week.

  • Avoid snug pants, tight elastic waists, and non-graduated hosiery, girdles and shapewear. These items can act like a tourniquet and clamp off blood flow, putting extra pressure on your leg veins.

  • Bruises and injury to the skin on your legs can damage superficial veins.

  • Standing and sitting for long periods of time can cause blood to pool in the veins of legs. Walk around every 30 minutes. If you’re stuck, point and flex your feet several times an hour.

  • Slather on sunscreen. Over time, sun damage can contribute to spider veins. Forego the tan and put on your SPF.

  • Put your legs on life support. Most importantly, your first line of defense should always include graduated compression support hose and socks, which push the blood out of your leg veins. Be sure to wear them when you’re going to be sitting or standing for long periods of time. All of Solidea’s luxurious hosiery are made with graduated compression. Choose products with a compression level of 8 or higher.
