Leg Pain
Leg pain literally slows you down. Some days, even walking hurts. Your upper and lower legs feel achy, burning or like “pins and needles.” Cramping, especially in the calves, may put high heels on hiatus. Standing or sitting for long periods of time becomes uncomfortable.

LEG PAIN: NO WALK IN THE PARK
Your legs are one busy body part. You rely on them all day long - for dashing to work, chasing your kids, strolling with friends, and shopping Saturday away. Leg pain, then, can seriously sideline you.
Achy legs often stem from poor circulation. When circulation is constricted, your legs don’t receive the proper supply of blood and they become painful. You can get leg pain just from being on your feet or (ironically) sitting all day. Too tight shoes or slouchy posture may also play a role.
The good news: simple lifestyle changes can prevent leg pain from flaring and reduce existing symptoms. Here are some ways to leave leg pain behind:
- Break away: If you spend a lot of time sitting or standing, take frequent (every 30 minutes or so) breaks. A short walk or a little stretching can go far to boost circulation and prevent fluid from pooling in your calves and ankles.
- Watch your back: No hunching, please! Practice good posture by sitting with feet flat on the floor and your head aligned with your hips. Pilates and yoga also score high for strengthening the back and revving up circulation.
- Drink up: Leg muscle cramps may occur due to dehydration or an imbalance of electrolytes in your bloodstream. Keep a water bottle handy but also low-fat chocolate milk. New research shows that this childhood favorite is even better than sports drinks at replenishing muscle-boosting nutrients such as calcium, sodium, and potassium.
- Get rolling: Walking and cycling are two excellent workouts for preventing leg pain. Both get blood flowing, build muscle, ease cramps and help you maintain a healthy weight. Be sure to warm up and stretch properly before and after exercise. This will prevent soreness and injuries that can lead to or worsen leg pain.
- Slip on cute flats: Save your Jimmy Choo for special occasions. Studies show that tight-fitting shoes, especially pointy heels, can pinch nerves in the feet, leading to calf pain. For everyday wear, podiatrists recommend heels no higher than 1½ inches (or 2 inches for wedges).
- Ditch your desk: Mini breaks throughout the workday alleviate that prickly feeling that accompanies sitting for long periods of time. Every half hour or so, go for a short walk or stand and stretch.
- Put your feet up: Raising your legs above heart level helps to promote good blood flow and relax tired muscles. Create a new ritual where you end the day with your feet propped on a couple of pillows.
- Slip on some support: When you suffer from leg pain, plain old pantyhose is not an option. Instead, soothe aching legs with graduated compression hosiery that enhances circulation. Specialized, stylish support hosiery from Solidea features graduated compression technology to re-direct blood flow and prevent leg pain from slowing you down.
